traces

Part of an ongoing investigation into process based practice, utilising methodologies of performative drawing and live installation. The exhibition consists of a performance space with a two metre high curved wall structure, marked off by white painted floor, alongside hanging works and video documentation of the installation process of the performative work.

Poppy Jools uses durational systematics and repetition to simultaneously create both a psychological space for themselves as the artist and an introspective experience for the spectating audience. The works are tactile, created using only hands as the application tool. In scheduled two-hour working times charcoal is applied directly onto the surface of the wall, which has been constructed within the space to emulate the purposeful space for expression. This intentional movement away from the bordered confines of paper allows the metaphorical psychological space to become visible and tangible. Through regimented routine and repetitive action, Jools alludes to the habitual physiology of anxious behaviour whilst paradoxically creating a cathartic experience comparative to meditative practice.
